The Hill UTV Fest: Take Your Side-By-Side For A Winning Ride!

Side-by-side (UTV) vehicles have taken the offroad world by storm in recent years, and for good reason! They are terrific to drive and offer a great way to get out and explore the wilderness. If you want to take your UTV experience up a notch, consider entering a race!

Side By Side Fury is here to help you prepare your vehicle for competition. We’ll discuss a few concerns to consider before hitting the race track.

Step 1: Purchase

Initially used for farm and ranch work, utility task vehicles (UTVs) have come a long way in recent years. Nowadays, there are all sorts of UTVs on the market, from basic models to fully decked-out race machines. If you don’t already own a UTV, you will need to purchase one before you can start racing.

Not just any UTV, however. The type you’ll need is the slicker, narrower, sports UTVs offered by lines like Honda, Kawasaki, Can-Am, and Polaris Ranger. These UTVs are made for speed and agility, which you’ll need on the race track.

Step 2: Customize

While many manufacturers design their UTVs to be race-ready right off the assembly line, there are still some modifications you’ll need to make before taking yours out on the track. For example, you’ll need to install a roll cage and racing harnesses. This will protect you in the event of a rollover or crash and also keep you firmly in your seat so you can focus on the race.

If you’ve already registered for the Hill UTV Fest, check that your SXS make, model, tech specs, and features match the competition class you signed up for. You can customize your ride beforehand with new parts from our shop to make sure you have the advantage on race day.

Step 3: Invest

Any racing, including UTV racing, demands proper investment in racing gear. You’ll find the equipment you need at a specialized store, likely at the same one you visited for aftermarket products to customize your ride. Here are the basics:

  1. An excellent helmet to meet or exceed safety standards and has a visor to keep dirt, dust, and debris from your eyes.
  2. Racing gloves to protect your hands while holding on tight to the steering wheel.
  3. Boots with ankle support to keep your feet and lower legs comfortable and safe.
  4. A fire-resistant racing suit, which most race organizations require.
  5. Long-sleeved shirts and trousers with reinforcements like a neck brace to protect your spine in the event of a crash.
  6. Goggles or glasses with shatter-resistant lenses.

Step 4: Inspect

UTV racing accidents can be as severe as other motorsport accidents, so it’s crucial to be properly prepared before hitting the track. Run your ride through a thorough tech inspection to ensure everything is in proper working order.

Experienced UTV engineers will probably require you to upgrade your ride in the following elements:

  • Roll cage, roof, and side doors;
  • Suitable tires for the terrain;
  • Engine’s cooling system;
  • Drivetrain, suspensions, transmission, brake;
  • Mirror;
  • Safety nets, fire extinguishers, you get the idea.
